MySpec

Privacy Policy

Last updated 30 September 2026 · MySpec handles personal information in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023

MySpec is a Christian dating service for singles across Nigeria and the diaspora. To introduce you to people you might connect with, we have to handle personal information about you. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights Nigerian law gives you over it.

1. Who we are

MySpec ("we", "us", "our") is the data controller for the personal information described in this policy. We decide how and why your information is used, and we are accountable to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) for the way we handle it.

2. The law we follow

We process personal information in accordance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA), the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and the directives of the NDPC. Where you live outside Nigeria, we also honour the local data protection law that applies to you.

3. Information you give us

When you create a profile, we collect:

  • Account details — your name, email address, phone number, password, and the sign-in method you choose.
  • Profile details — date of birth, gender, city, state, Nigerian state of origin, hometown, occupation, education, relationship status, whether you have children, what you are looking for and your other preferences, and your written answers to profile prompts.
  • Photos — the images you upload to your profile.
  • Messages — the messages you exchange with other members, which we store so we can deliver them and investigate reports of abuse.

4. Sensitive personal information

The NDPA treats information about your religious beliefs, your ethnic origin and your health as sensitive personal information, and gives it extra protection. MySpec asks about your faith, denomination, ethnic group and lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking because these are central to relationship compatibility in Nigeria.

We collect this information only with your explicit consent, which you give when you complete those parts of your profile. We use it to power compatibility matching, and we show it to other members only where you have chosen to display it. You can hide your ethnic group at any time in your profile settings, and you can remove these details from your profile altogether.

5. Identity verification information

Every member must verify their identity before they can message anyone. Verification is carried out by our identity partner, Didit, which checks a government-issued identity document and a live selfie against each other.

We receive and store only the outcome of that check — whether you passed, the level of verification, your verified date of birth and age, the type of document you used, and a reference number. We do not store your identity document images or your biometric data on our systems.

6. Payment information

Subscriptions are paid for through our payment partner, Flutterwave, which supports Nigerian cards, bank transfers and USSD. We receive a transaction reference, the amount, the plan and billing cycle, and the payment status. We never see or store your full card number, PIN or bank credentials.

7. Information we collect automatically

We record how you use MySpec — the profiles you view, the likes you send, your last active time, and the device, browser and approximate location you connect from. We use this to run the service, keep members safe, and improve matching. We use only essential cookies and similar storage; we do not sell advertising space or allow third-party advertising trackers on MySpec.

8. Information we receive from Google

You can create a MySpec account with your Google account. When you sign in with Google we receive your name, your email address and your Google profile picture. We ask Google for that basic information only — we do not request access to your Gmail, your Google Contacts, your Google Drive, your Google Calendar or any other Google service, and we do not read your Google content.

We use the information we receive from Google only to create your MySpec account, to sign you in and to keep your account secure. We do not use it for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not share it with anyone except the service providers who help us run MySpec, where Nigerian law requires us to disclose it, or where it is necessary to protect a member from harm.

MySpec's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

You can revoke MySpec's access to your Google account at any time from the third-party apps page of your Google Account, and you can delete your MySpec account at any time as described in this policy.

9. Why we use your information

  • To create your account and run your profile.
  • To suggest people you are likely to be compatible with, based on your own stated preferences.
  • To verify identity and keep married or fraudulent users off the platform.
  • To deliver your messages and show you who has liked you.
  • To take payment for subscriptions and manage your billing.
  • To investigate reports, remove abusive accounts, and enforce our Terms of Service.
  • To respond to your support requests and to tell you about changes to the service.
  • To meet our legal and regulatory obligations in Nigeria.

We rely on your consent, on the need to perform our contract with you, on our legitimate interest in keeping MySpec safe and functional, and on our legal obligations as our lawful bases for processing.

10. Who we share your information with

We share personal information only with the parties who help us run MySpec:

  • Didit, for identity verification.
  • Flutterwave, for payment processing.
  • Our cloud hosting and storage providers, who hold the data on our behalf.
  • Professional advisers, where necessary.
  • Law enforcement agencies, regulators or the courts, where Nigerian law compels us to disclose it or where it is necessary to protect someone from harm.

Other members see the parts of your profile you have chosen to display, your first name and age, your city and state, your photos, and anything you send them in a message. We never sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

11. Sending information outside Nigeria

Some of our service providers process data on servers outside Nigeria. Where that happens, we transfer the information only under the safeguards the NDPA permits, and we require those providers to protect it to a standard consistent with Nigerian law.

12. How long we keep your information

We keep your profile and messages for as long as your account is open. You can delete your account yourself at any time from Settings in the app, or ask us to delete it from our Delete Account page.

If you delete your account, we remove your profile, photos and messages within 30 days, except where we must keep records for longer to satisfy Nigerian tax, accounting, fraud-prevention or dispute obligations. Verification outcomes are kept for as long as we need them to show that every member who messaged was verified.

13. How we protect your information

Your data is encrypted in transit, access to member records is restricted to the staff who need it, and sensitive provider credentials are held on our servers rather than in the app. If a breach ever puts your rights at risk, we will notify the NDPC and the affected members as the NDPA requires.

14. Your rights

Under the NDPA you have the right to:

  • Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Have inaccurate information corrected.
  • Ask us to delete your information.
  • Ask us to restrict or stop processing your information.
  • Object to processing we carry out on the basis of legitimate interest.
  • Receive your information in a portable format.
  • Withdraw consent at any time, including for the sensitive information in your profile.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us through the Support Centre inside the app. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.

15. Age requirement

MySpec is strictly for people aged 18 and above. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If we discover that an account belongs to someone under 18, we close it and delete the information held on it.

16. Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your information, we will update this page and tell you in the app before the change takes effect. Continuing to use MySpec after that means you accept the updated policy.

17. How to contact us

If you have any question about this policy, or you want to exercise any of the rights described above, contact our Data Protection Officer at dare@myspec.ng. You can also reach us through the Support Centre inside the app, where your message is logged and answered.

Please include the email address on your MySpec account so we can find your records. We aim to respond to every request within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
